Best Practices in the Florida College System
The Best Practice website provides information to help college leaders develop innovative solutions to challenges that face their institutions. The website may be utilized to learn about new techniques, improve processes, create new programs, make current programs more effective and enhance outreach. This site also offers an opportunity for users to access information on successful programs/strategies and share knowledge. Information regarding exemplary programs within the Florida College System may be submitted to the Division by following the link "Submit Best Practice" below.Best Practices Definition

My Bridge to SuccessSt. Petersburg College
Summary:
Redesigning upper-level developmental math, reading, and writing courses as eight-week, 2 credit hour courses reduced the time that some students spent in remedial coursework; allowed some students to take transfer level math, reading, and/or writing courses in the same semester; individualized instruction through course modularization; and promoted student success through careful supervision/mentoring by faculty. Content delivery included mini-lectures by faculty and diagnostic testing to tailor instruction for specific course competencies.Program Area: Student Affairs

Single StopMiami Dade College
Summary:
Single Stop USA (SSUSA) in collaboration with Miami Dade College is a revolutionary initiative to slash poverty nationally with an approach that is simple, effective and ultimately paradigm-shifting. Single Stop bridges the information gap separating low-income families from life-changing public benefits, tax credits and other essential services that remain untapped and inaccessible. These basic resources - food, health insurance, child care and tax refunds - increase the likelihood that families are healthy and stable, with parents who work and children who attend school.Program Area: Workforce Education

Power Plant Technology InstituteIndian River State College
Summary:
The Power Plant Technology Institute at IRSC serves as a skilled worker pipeline for energy companies. Over 100 graduates have been employed in the energy sector at salaries averaging $55,000. Students complete courses taught by industry experts, participate in paid summer internships and earn an Associate degree. The program reduces recruitment costs, creates a pool of prepared workers and supports excellent employment opportunities. The success of the program earned IRSC an NSF grant to establish a regional enter for the Southeast US to train trainers in nuclear energy education.Program Area: Business

Broward College President's Leadership AcademyBroward College
Summary:
Knowing the number of baby boomer's projected to retire from the college, as well as knowing the exact number of Broward employees in the FRS DROP program with known retirement dates, President Armstrong believed succession planning was an absolute necessity and that a leadership academy would be the most proactive way to address this need.
