2009-2010 Student Course Information

1.	Record Type:	I04 -	All items 1-63 are valid for interdistrict record and Bright Futures record transfer.
		S04 -	Items 1-20, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58, and 60-63 are valid for transcripts and Bright Futures record transfer.
		T04 -	Items 1-11, 13-14, 16, 20-21, and 63 are valid for Technical Center transcript transfer.
2.	Transfer one record per course per year or credit earned period per year. A maximum of 40 course records may be sent for a student during a school year.
3.	If the district grading scale is different from the state 4.0 scale, the district grading scales and the definition of any local flags should be in the comment fields on the Student School Year record.
4.	If elementary students are in self-contained courses the self-contained course number should be used with each subject area in which the student is participating. The abbreviated course title would be district defined with a maximum of 20 characters. For example a first grade self-contained class could be sent as: 5100070 Int Lang Arts 5100070 Mathematics 5100070 Sci/Health/Soc St
5.	Courses in progress at the time a student transfers must contain a 'P' on the Course Flag field.
6.	Course in Progress Information: See the attached course in progress grades write-up for an explanation of each field and examples of how the fields should be used.
7.	The presence of LOW-VALUES in data fields causes significant problems for several institutions in the receipt of student records. A transaction will be rejected if non-displayable characters are sent in the data unless found in Filler Reserved for Local Use (last 9 bytes of each record type). Please use some other appropriate character (e.g., SPACES) with which to initialize your records before sending them.
8.	Required fields are indicated by an asterisk (*) next to the field name.
9.	Special characters, tilde (~), caret (^), and grave accent (`), are used as delimiters in the translation of FASTER to SPEEDE/ExPRESS. They are reserved symbols and as such cannot be included in data sent through FASTER to a SPEEDE/ExPRESS institution.
10.	A new course flag of "+" is created. It is to be used to indicate that the course is associated with a second course for which credit is also awarded. The course number of the second course will be supplied in data element Course Number, Substituted (though, in this context, additional rather than substituted credit is involved). The state subject area of the second course should be recorded in a new field Course Substituted, State Subject Area Requirements. This new field is optional, and should be use only in connection with courses using a new "+" flag. If this field is left blank for a course with a "+" flag, the second course will be assumed to count towards the student's electives requirement.
11.	Two existing fields (School Number, Where Credit Earned and School Name, Where Credit Earned) are redefined (School Number, Where Course Taken and School Name, Where Course Taken) in order to accommodate the needs of the Technical Centers. See items 8a and 9a.
12.	~~The location of the current MAI codes has changed from FRN.DISTRICT.FACTS.EPEP.MAI.COURSES to https://app1.fldoe.org/hsmajors/DistrictDownloads.aspx. See Item 61.~~ See 17 & 18 below.
13.	The valid values for School Number, Current Enrollment have been expanded to include numbers "N998", "N999", "9994", and "9995",
14.	A new Vocational Program Code field is created. It is an optional field, to be used for Technical Center transcripts only. This new field is in addition to the existing Vocational Program Code field on the I/S/T05 format.
15.	The existing Course, State Subject Area Requirement code "VO" description was changed with two new subject area codes being added: "PA" - Practical Arts with Artistic Content, "SV" - Half Science and Half Vocational.
16.	A correction was made to the Course Title, Abbreviated field (field #14) to indicate the field is a required field to pass FASTER edits.
17.	Removed all Major Area of Interest (MAI) data fields from this FASTER format per Florida SB04 legislation. These fields were replaced by a FILLER of 80 characters. All subsequent fields were renumbered accordingly.
18.	Removed all links to locations for the download of Major Area of Interest (MAI) code values throughout this page.
19.	Added verbiage to District Number, Where Credit Earned (field #7) and School Number, Where Credit Earned (field #8) to clarify what values must be sent for these fields when addressing Migrant transcripts to the MSIX system (99/0006).
20.	Additional verbiage was added to fields District Number, Where Credit Earned and School Number, Where Credit Earned to further clarifiy valid combinations of District/School numbers in distiguishing Florida in-state courses from out-of-state courses.

Courses in the Language Arts section of the Course Code Directory will be coded as EN if they meet the specific graduation requirements for English. Those Language Arts courses which do not meet the graduation requirements for English would be coded as electives (EL) or language arts electives (LA) depending on district policy.

Courses in the Social Studies section of the Course Code Directory which meet specific graduation requirements will be coded to match the graduation requirement which they address: EC-Economics, WH-World History, AH-American History, and AG-American Government. Social Studies courses which do not meet specific graduation requirements will be coded as electives (EL) or social studies electives (SS) depending on district policy.

Courses in foreign languages may be coded as electives (EL) or as foreign language electives (FL) depending on district policy. If the student is completing coursework for college admissions or the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, foreign language courses should be coded FL.

Since all science and mathematics courses currently listed in the Course Code Directory meet specific graduation requirements, any credits in mathematics or science taken above the minimum graduation requirements should be coded as MA or SC or as appropriate.

The Science Graduation requirement for Oceanography may be fulfilled by completing the JROTC Coast Guard Maritime program 1804320-1804350. If that substitution is made, the JROTC courses should contain an A in the Course Flag field. The Science Graduation requirements for General Science may be fulfilled by completing the JROTC Air Force Aerospace program 1800300-1800320. If that substitution is made, the JROTC courses should contain an F in the Course Flag field. The Science Graduation requirements for General Science may be fulfilled by completing the JROTC Navy Naval Science program 1802300-1802330. If that substitution is made, the JROTC courses should contain a K in the Course Flag field.

Computer Education (CE) may be substituted for an elective credit when a district's local policy requires a student to complete a Computer Education course in order to graduate.

The Practical Arts graduation requirement may be fulfilled by substituting one of the basic Computer Education (CE) courses on a curriculum equivalency basis. The course numbers that can be used are 0200300-0200380, 0200800-0200810, 0201300-0201360, 0201380 and 0200890. If a substitution is made the Computer Education course should contain a 1 in the Course Flag field. The Practical Arts graduation requirement also may be fulfilled by the completion of the JROTC program 1800300-1800360, or 1801300-1801330, or 1802300-1802330, or 1803300-1803330, or 1804300-1804350. If that substitution is made, the JROTC courses should contain a zero (0) in the Course Flag field. The Practical Arts graduation requirement may also be fulfilled by Journalism 1006300-1006330. If that substitution is made, the Journalism course should contain a dollar sign ($) in the Course Flag field.

The Life Management Skills graduation requirement may be fulfilled by the completion of the JROTC Army Program 1801300-1801310. If that substitution is made, the JROTC Army courses should contain an O in the Course Flag field. The Life Management Skills graduation requirement may be fulfilled by the completion of the JROTC Marine Corps Program 1803300-1803310. Beginning with School Year 2001-02, Section 232.2463, F.S., requires that the following scale be used in determining high school grades:

A=90%-100%

B=80%-89%

C=70%-79%

D=60%-69%

F=0%-59%

The district may use either a letter or a numeric grade on the permanent report card and transcript. Plus ("+") or minus ("-")signs may be displayed on the local report card, automated permanent record, and transcript but cannot be included in calculating the state grade point average.

Grades PK-8, Adult Basic Skills (optional)

For grades Pk-8, use any designator which falls within the three alphanumeric character definitions.

Codes displayed for Pk-8 grades other than those listed must be defined in the text section of the automated permanent record file.

For courses taken before School Year 2001-02 the following scale is used in determining high school grades:

Weeks in Grading Cycle

A code which represents the number of weeks in each grading period. The element is used during automated interdistrict records transfer when course in progress information is transmitted. The number can vary between districts and across grade levels within the same district.Examples:

Code	Definition
06	If report cards are distributed every six weeks for students in grades 6-12, 06 will be entered which would indicate there may be up to six sets of six week grades during the 180 day school year.
09	If report cards are distributed every nine weeks for students in grades PK-5, 09 will be entered which would indicate there may be up to four sets of nine week grades during the 180 day school year.
12	If a district distributes report cards every 12 weeks for students in grades 9-12, 12 will be entered which would indicate there may be up to three sets of 12 week grades during the 180 day school year.
