The Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Family and Community Outreach highly promotes a proven training program that involves families in improving student achievement – PASSport to Success. The program strengthens the crucial role parents play in their children’s education. Research shows that when families take an active and direct role in their children’s education, those children get better grades, score higher on achievement tests, have lower drop-out rates, have fewer discipline problems, and are more likely to attend college than children whose families are not actively involved. This positive correlation between meaningful family involvement and high student achievement is undeniable.
Originally developed by Dr. John Ban, a professor of education at Indiana University Northwest, this program shows parents how to become learning facilitators so they may effectively meet the educational needs of their children. This school-based program has earned a proven track record in Valdosta, GA and other locations.
The PASSport to Success program is composed of eight individual, interrelated modules. They are:
- Parent Attitude
- Structuring the Home Environment
- Study Skills
- Homework and Learning Expediters
- Note-taking Skills
- Helping Children Prepare for Tests
- Memory Enhancement/Developing Thinking Skills
- Teaching Reading Skills
Upon completing this program, parents will have an effective and systematic method that will enable them to help their children reach Florida’s high academic standards.
Over 6,000 trainers are available statewide to help teachers and parents raise the academic achievement of Florida's childeren. If you have other questions about PASSport to Success, please contact the Bureau of Family & Community Outreach.
