2010-2011 New Competitive Mentoring/Student Assistance Initiatives Programs

After School Programs Inc.

After School Programs, A.C.C.E.S.S. (All Children Can Excel, Shine & Succeed) program provides an educationally, enriching after school program to 400 students, grades K-5 in two Collier County Schools. ASP provides enriching literacy, math, science, and technology experiences for all students, as well as tutoring and mentoring activities. The goal of this program is to improve student success both academically and socially, to increase parental involvement in their child's education and to provide parents and the community with additional learning opportunities.

Barry University

Barry University’s College Reach-Out Program through its Mentoring and Student Assistance Initiative motivates and prepares at-risk, low-performing and economically disadvantaged students, in grades 6 through 12, to pursue and successfully complete a college education. Our mission is to provide school and community-based mentoring, counseling, leadership development, tutoring, and outreach services to support the schools and communities, help students remain connected to the classroom, raise their personal level of performance, remove barriers to learning, and strengthen students’ emotional, cognitive, and behavioral skills to enhance academic and personal achievement.

Boys & Girls Club of Collier County

Mentoring Our Future, a program of Boys & Girls Club of Collier County provides mentoring services or a Student Assistance Initiative program to 400 students. Through our Mentoring Our Future project the Club will provide one on one, group and peer mentoring for our club members, as well as curriculum based activities. Our courses focus on six core program areas: Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Technology, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, and Sports and Fitness. These programs are structured with specific 45 to 50 minute program blocks by gender, grade and age appropriate activities. and provide an opportunity to uncover hidden talents, pique interest and passion in activities not previously explored.

Computer Mentors Group, Inc.

The STEM 360 Mentoring & Tutoring Assistance Program of Computer Mentors Group, Inc. provides mentoring and tutoring services to disadvantaged and underrepresented middle school youth enrolled in Title I public schools. Through our program, students with a demonstrated need for academic assistance in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are matched in an instructional mentoring relationship with experienced science instructors, subject areas tutors, and technology lab assistants. It is our goal for students and parents to realize this as an opportunity to exhibit learning gains on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), district final examinations, increase school grades, and career interest in STEM fields.

Duval County School District

Duval County’s KIPP Jacksonville Charter Schools “A/B/C” project is a student assistance initiative program to improve student outcomes in academics, behavior and character. The primary strategy to improve student achievement is through our extended school schedule which includes extended days, school weeks and year, which allows our students to spend approximately two-thirds more time in school vs. their peers at traditional public schools. The extra time, all within a structured setting, allows for more exposure to core academic instruction, as well as one hour of physical education and instrumental music instruction per day. Students also receive 1-2 hours of homework per night, and may call their teachers on their KIPP-provided cell phones in the evening for homework assistance.

EPPS Christian Center

Youth Exposed to Success (Y.E.S.) a program of Epps Christian Center, Inc., provides mentoring or a Student Assistance Initiative Program to at-risk Middle School students. Through our Y.E.S. project, students will learn conflict resolution, violence prevention, communication and social skills, and will improve academic performance through the use of tutorial and enrichment services.

Florida Atlantic University

Mentoring High School Students for Reading Success: A Good FIT in the Glades, a program of the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) College of Education, provides mentoring assistance to high school students in a rural economically disadvantaged community. At-risk, low-performing students enrolled in intensive reading FCAT Retake classes are mentored by local state college students trained in research-based reading and motivational strategies. They use these strategies while working with individual and small groups in assigned classrooms during the school day. The program focuses on increasing academic achievement in reading, student engagement and social development to significantly improve graduation, retention, and attendance rates.

Investing In Our Youth

Girls Elite, a program of Investing In Our Youth, provides mentoring services to students in 3rd through 12th grade to assist them in becoming successful emotionally, academically, and socially. Through our Girls Elite Program, young ladies develop important life skills, learn about various careers, plan for the future, improve school attitudes and performance and build self-confidence. Academic Tutoring and Homework Help is also provided to increase educational proficiency. By providing youth with consistent, caring mentors, they learn practical skills and develop core values through exposure to positive social activities and the world of work.

Leon County School District

The 100 Success Academy is a Leon County School that focuses on teaching middle school students who are two or more grade levels behind. The Academy will focus on academic redemption (course recovery, remediation and acceleration) so that students may join their cohort group in high school. The 100 Success Academy provides both mentoring and student assistance during an extended day program. Through our mentoring and student assistance projects, we will meet our main objective of preventing these students from giving up and dropping out of school

Non-Violence Project USA, Inc.

ACHIEVE, a project of the Non-Violence Project USA, Inc., is a program initiative that will augment child protective factors. The program model targets students, between the ages of 13 and 17, identified by school officials as being academically and behaviorally challenged, and consequently at risk of drop-out and/or expulsion. The program initiative will promote the underlining goals of improved student attendance, school attachment, and academic achievement. Program components will be offered during and after school utilizing one-on-one mentoring, tutoring (group and individual), leadership/ communication skills training and community service activities designed to increase FCAT performance, increase academic performance by at least one percentage point, increase school attachment and volunteerism, as well as decrease unexcused absences and antisocial conduct.

Putnam County School District

Project Sesame, a program of the Northeast Florida Educational Consortium (NEFEC), provides academic mentoring in reading and mathematics, as well as activities to foster resilience by building selected protective factors necessary for success in school and beyond. It is designed to augment the current Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program as well as to add students who did not participate in SES. SESAME will offer a seamless transition from SES in order to provide year-long mentoring services to children in need. This project serves selected third-fifth grade students in Columbia, Hamilton, and Suwannee school districts.

Quality Life Center of Southwest Florida, Inc.

The Youth Rescue Initiative, a project of Quality Life Center of Southwest Florida, Inc., provides mentoring services and is a Student Assistance program for low-income K-12 students. The program will seek to improve reading and math scores, motivate students to stay in school, and provide the skills necessary to help students advance to the next grade level, and increase civic engagement through service-learning projects. This will be accomplished through our Youth Rescue Initiative reading and math focused tutoring and one on one/group mentoring sessions.

Seminole County School District

The Academic Foundations Project, a student assistance initiative of Seminole County School District, provides innovative, individualized educational programming to low-achieving, high-need students in eight of the district’s middle and high schools. Through tutoring, student success initiatives, and mentoring, the project will improve academic performance, enhance personal and social functioning, and increase the ability for students to successfully transition between grade levels, thereby increasing graduation rates of high-needs students.

Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board

Leaders for Life is a student-to-student mentor program created by the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board. High School students are trained in Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and establish mentee relationships by teaching- to-learn the 7 Habits in grades K-9. Partners include the University of Florida, the Guadalupe Center of Immokalee, and Franklin Covey, serving students in Collier and Port Charlotte public school districts. Mentor and mentee students improve life skills, develop strong character traits, and attain a proactive attitude toward school.

Suwannee Valley Learning, Inc.

The After School Mentoring Program is a project of Suwannee Valley Learning, Inc. This program will provide mentoring/tutoring in the areas of FCAT remediation and retention prevention skills, using Sylvan Learning Center resources, for Columbia, Suwannee and Hamilton counties. Through this project a tangible result will be effected in increasing FCAT scores and lowering grade retentions in this rural North Florida area.

The Juvenile Transitions Center, Inc.

The Juvenile Transition Center, Inc., offers mentoring and academic enrichment activities to educationally at-risk middle and high school students attending low-performing schools in Palm Beach County. Our innovative reading and math curricula are designed to engage students in the meta-cognitive strategy of theatrical reading and by integrating them in modern applications of math, science and technology through the construction of robots. The program goals are to improve overall academic achievement, FCAT proficiency, increase graduation rates and reduce dropout rates among our participants.

Town of White Springs

Helping Our People Excel (HOPE) After School Program delivers student enrichment and child development programming to at-risk children and youth in the Town of White Springs. The program’s components are integrated, comprehensive, and evidence based. The program addresses the whole student by providing the following: educational enhancement & remediation programming, positive adult/youth mentoring experiences, social and civic engagement opportunities, health learning and recreational activities, as well as parental enhancement programming. Through the afterschool program, the full spectrum of participants’ needs will be addressed which will result in the enhancement of academic and developmental progress among targeted children and adults within the White Springs community.

YMCA of West Central Florida

Y-READ, a program sponsored by the YMCA of West Central Florida provides mentoring and student assistance services to low-income struggling young readers in grades K-3 throughout Florida. Students receive early reading intervention and mentoring at no cost to their families, and are given access to structured YMCA after-school and sports programs. Students are referred by their school because of academic, social and emotional needs. They are matched with caring mentors who implement a research-based reading and social skills program tailored to each child's specific needs. Progress is monitored throughout the year to ensure success. Through our Y-READ Program, over 200 students will receive the help they need to develop reading skills, self-confidence and the ability to succeed in school."
