Implementing Florida's Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Education Program

Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Education Standards

At its meeting on March 15, 2005, the State Board of Education adopted Child Performance Standards for the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Education Program.

Based on collaboration with a Panel of Experts, the standards reflect the latest research on child development and developmentally appropriate practices for four-year-old children. Benchmarks in the domains of Language and Communication and Emergent Literacy further explain what Florida’s children should know and be able to do at the end of the VPK experience.

To ensure all VPK teachers effectively utilize the Standards, a training module has been developed. This training is based on the most current early childhood research and is appropriate for all VPK instructors. The participants will be introduced to the VPK Standards, which are guidelines that describe what children should know and be able to do at the end of the VPK year Along with providing participants with an overview of the VPK Standards, this training will also provide

  • Examples of developmentally appropriate instructional techniques for four-year-old children
  • Ways to enhance the early learning environment
  • Information to assist teachers in continuing their investigation of a topic of interest.
  • VPK Education Standards (PDF)
  • View the Training PowerPoint (PDF)

To receive an inservice certificate and VPK Standards Manual, training is available through your local VPK Facilitator

The VPK Standards Manual may also be purchased through the Florida Institute of Education.
