Sample Lesson Plans Based on the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011)

These lesson plans, based on the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011), are designed to help develop the skills that four-year-olds should know and be able to do by the end of their prekindergarten year. There are targeted Standards for Four-Year-Olds included in each lesson plan. To show prekindergarten administrators and teachers how one lesson can be easily integrated across the five domains of development, related Standards for Four-Year-Olds are also included in each lesson plan.

II. Approaches to Learning

Approaches to Learning is a unique and critical domain of children's development that focuses on children's attitudes and dispositions toward learning. The lesson plans included in each of the other domains of development focus on specific content knowledge that children should know and be able to do by the end of their VPK experience. Although, Approaches to Learning is not about specific content knowledge, it may be fostered through the lesson plans as children deal with new environments, interactions, and discoveries.

The four components of approaches to learning including eagerness and curiosity, persistence, creativity, planning and reflection, help direct the "how" of learning in all other domains of development. Children learn best when eagerness and curiosity, persistence, creativity, and planning and reflection are encouraged and supported in all domains of development through play. The degree to which they successfully employ approaches to learning components is highly dependent upon the quality and quantity of interactions with supportive adults and peers.

    Each child gives a compliment to a friend and passes him/her "The Giving Box" (e.g., an empty gift-wrapped box). The child, who receives the compliment holds "The Giving Box," and gives a compliment to another friend.

    Two Onset and Rime Picture Cards are placed face up on the table. The children listen as the teacher segments a word that names one of the pictures on the Onset and Rime Picture Cards into its onset and rime. Then the children try to guess which word the teacher has segmented.

    Children play onset-rime puppet games with the teacher to determine which word the puppets are making when combining the onset (first consonant sound in a word, before the vowel) and rime (the vowel and what follows the vowel in that syllable).

    Children match Onset (first sound) and Rime (the vowel and all the sounds that follow the onset) Picture Cards to the corresponding rime on train cars (e.g., -at).

    Children wear a detective's hat as they segment and blend the onset (first sound) and rime (the vowel and all the sounds that follow the onset) in words. Children use a magnifying glass to search for the picture that matches the Rime Picture Card on the Rime Picture Board game board.

    Children will play I See (similar to I Spy) and identify objects that are being described based on their location (position) in the classroom. Children describe the relative position of objects that have been described.

    Children will analyze pictures of objects to see if they are examples of symmetry or non-symmetry. Each child will construct a ladybug and explain whether or not it is an example of symmetry or non-symmetry.

    Children will play Simone Says (similar to Simon Says) and follow directions with positional words to move through space and find places in the learning environment.
