Delia Chacon, Florida History Teacher of the Year.

Delia Chacon, an American history teacher at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, has been named Florida History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America.

“Ms. Chacon’s enthusiasm, love of education, and commitment to teaching American History is apparent in the dedication she brings to the classroom and to her students,” said Levon Terrell, state coordinator for the award. “Her teaching strategy engages students through a research-based, project-driven approach in which she integrates knowledge of the past and present as a foundation for building student knowledge and equipping them to be successful citizens in the future.”

Chacon will receive a $1,000 honorarium and will be in the running for the National History Teacher of the Year Award to be selected this fall. Oak Ridge High School’s library will receive a core archive of history books and materials from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Chacon has been teaching for twenty-three years and has been at Oak Ridge High School for five years. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Chacon is currently the student government advisor at Oak Ridge, as well as a contributor to school district curriculum writing projects.
