Reducing the Risk curriculum has been found to have a measurable impact in delaying the initiation of sexual intercourse, reducing unprotected sex among some students, increasing knowledge about pregnancy risk and prevention of sexually transmissible infections, and increasing communication with parents about abstinence and birth control. It is one of only five curricula identified as a "program that works" by the United States Centers for Disease Control.
This training is valued at approximately $800 per person, but there is no cost to participants. Participation is being sponsored by the HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Program. Each participant will leave with materials to teach 30 students using the curriculum. School districts will be reimbursed for the cost of substitutes for teachers who attend this professional development opportunity.
