NAEP is The Nation's Report Card
- Is administered at grades 4, 8, and 12.
- Measures student achievement and reports changes in student performance over time.
- Is the nation’s only ongoing survey of what students know and can do in various subject areas (reading, mathematics, writing, and science at the state and national levels; U.S. history, geography, civics, economics, world history, foreign language, and the arts at the national level).
- Reports performance by student groups, e.g., by gender, race/ethnicity, eligibility for Free/Reduced-Price Lunch, English language learners (ELL), and participation in exceptional student education programs.
- Includes data from the 50 states, the District of Columbia Public Schools, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and selected urban districts.
- Was designed as a survey assessment in 1969 to produce national results.
- Was expanded to produce state-level results in 1990. Results for selected large urban school districts have been available since 2002.
- Assessments are administered, with the help of contractors, by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
- Does NOT provide scores at the school or individual student levels.
To obtain (NAEP) data, please access the Nation’s Report Card homepage at http://www.nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/.
NAEP Data Explorer (NDE)
- Is an interactive tool used to explore assessment results for various subjects, grades, and jurisdictions.
- Allows users to create custom statistical tables, graphics, charts, and maps using NAEP data.
- Uses data to examine student performance in the context of gender, race/ethnicity, public or private school, teacher experience, and hundreds of other factors gathered from students, teachers, and schools that have participated in NAEP.
- Can be accessed by visiting NAEP Data Explorer site or by clicking Analyze Data on the NAEP home page.
