The primary focus of the Bureau of Academic Achievement through Language Acquisition (AALA) is to assist schools and districts in ensuring that students receive understandable instruction. Services are provided in the form of technical assistance by telephone, on-site visits, workshops, and presentations. In addition, AALA monitors school districts for compliance with State and Federal rules, regulations, 1990 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) et al. v. the State Board of Education (SBE) Consent Decree, and the September 2003 modification to the Consent Decree (PDF, 31KB).

AALA staff assists districts in developing grant proposals and obtaining federal funding from the United States Department of Education (USDOE), Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), for the Title III NCLB, and other special programs for ELL students. Additional services include a resource library, data resources, and a clearinghouse of translated documents.
