Aviation Students Invited to Student Showcase

Recently, the Broward College Aviation Institute was invited to participate at the National Career Pathways Network Conference (NCPN) at the Marriott World Center in Orlando as part of the Florida Career Pathways Network Student Showcase. The Aviation Institute was represented by college recruiters and two student representatives, including Kirk Tasson, Professional Pilot graduate, current flight instructor and bachelor's degree student at Broward College, and Brian Nena, President of the Student Air Traffic Control Association.

At the showcase, the aviation student representatives and program recruiters met with secondary and postsecondary teachers, administrators and career pathways coordinators from different institutions nationwide interested in learning about Broward College's successful transportation technology programs. Brian and Kirk were able to share their stories, career goals, college curriculum and future plans for advancement. The conference attendees were amazed at the opportunities the college offers to students interested in the fields of automotive, aviation, logistics and marine.

"The students certainly did bring spark and energy to the conference," said Teemus Warner, NCPN Exhibit Coordinator. "We received so many positive comments on the students from our attendees. The students are the final results of all of our efforts, and it was great to visit such outstanding examples." Broward College was one of few institutions invited to represent Florida's career and technical programs.

Students Participate in the SMG Turf Crew Mentoring Program at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, FL

On November 27th and December 11th students from the Keystone Heights Academy of Agriscience, Middleburg High School Academy of Agriscience and Oakleaf High School Plant Biotechnology program participated in the SMG Turf Crew Mentoring Program at EverBank Field during two Jacksonville Jaguars games. The students arrived at the stadium around 8am and immediately started working. They began setting up the sidelines, putting mats down, putting benches out, setting up cones and padding on the goal posts. During the day, students toured the different parts of the Turf Crew operations and got to sit down and talk with the employees about their training and education. During the game, the students were stationed behind the goal posts on each side and got to help raise and lower the net when the teams were kicking field goals. The students were so excited all through the day and loved every minute of it. It was a great learning experience for everyone involved and they hope to have the opportunity to do it again.

Workshops Teach Teens to be Money Masters

Learning about how to manage personal finances can be a daunting task for adults, but it can be especially difficult for teenagers. To provide middle school students and their parents with valuable information on the many important aspects of personal financial management, the Palmer Munroe Teen Center (PMTC) is offering a series of workshops entitled Money Masters. The first workshop was held on Saturday, January 21, from 11 am to 2 pm at the Teen Center, 1900 Jackson Bluff Road.

"Personal financial management is important for all of us, but especially for young people who in their early teen years are quickly exposed to a desire to spend money," said City Commissioner Andrew Gillum, a long-time supporter and Board member at the Palmer Munroe Teen Center. "This series of workshops will provide middle school students and their parents with a broad overview of managing financial resources, from earning money to budgeting and investing."

At Saturday's workshop, students enrolled in the Academy of Finance at Godby High School will lead middle school students through a series of activities aimed at reinforcing the costs associated with their decision making. Godby student and Teen Center participant Autumn Merrill said, "The Academy of Finance helps students prepare for a successful future, especially in this type of economy where so many are struggling to find jobs and manage their finances. The financial education that I have received is priceless." Parents will participate in similar activities, and as an added bonus, they will receive information about how their teens can become eligible for scholarships for the College Reach Out Program/Take Stock in Children program through Tallahassee Community College.

Additional workshops will be held on the third Saturday of each month through May, and there will also be a week-long spring break camp. Money Masters partners include the PMTC, the United Way of the Big Bend, Godby High School Academy of Finance, Tallahassee Community College/College Reach-Out Program and WFSU-TV. The series is designed to educate middle school students and their parents about the importance of earning, saving, budgeting and investing money. The goal is to ensure that youth and their families receive the skills and tools necessary to make good decisions about their finances.

The Palmer Munroe Teen Center, open Monday - Saturday from 2 - 8pm, is a joint venture between the City of Tallahassee, Leon County and the Leon County School District. For more information on the Teen Center, please call 891-2568 or visit www.talgov.com/parks.
