Hillsborough Senior Honored by Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) announced Maria Liliana Carrillo, a senior from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla., as the recipient of the Academic Excellence and Leadership Award. The honor is part of SHPE’s Technical Achievement Recognition (STAR) Awards that annually recognizes the year's highest level of achievement in Hispanic engineering and sciences in several different categories.
Carrillo started the Hispanic Youth Voice of Tampa for high school students in 2005. The program provides bilingual community service and leadership opportunities. The Hillsborough senior is one of only two students in the country to receive the scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The scholarship may be used at a two or four-year accredited college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico for the 2009-10 academic year. Winners were selected based on academic merit, community service, and leadership.
