Lee County Middle School Wins Odyssey of the Mind

Gulf Middle School students in Lee County recently won first place during the Odyssey of the Mind competition. Ashley Gosling, Cierra Harper, Kaylee Ludden, Katina White, Angela Minich and Kyle Bynoe were part of the Gulf Middle School team that will now head to the World Competition in Baltimore, Md., May 31 - June 3, 2008.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Students apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

The Gulf team problem at the state event involved constructing a battery-driven vehicle that could carry a team member and perform various other tasks within an eight-minute time limit.

The team earned two awards during the regional competition, including the Omer Award for benevolence in lending their battery to one of their competitors when the other teamís battery was out of compliance, and the Ranatra Fusca Award for their highly creative spontaneous solutions.
