Ten Brevard Schools Named as Statewide Music Demonstration Schools for 2008-11
The Florida Department of Education has awarded 10 Brevard schools the prestigious Music Demonstration School (MDS) title for 2008-2011, listing them among the best schools in the state for music instruction. This year, Brevard added three new MDS sites, and re-designated seven sites. Brevard now has a total of 23 of the 31 Music Demonstration Schools statewide and all five honorable mention sites, leading the state in this program.
The three new MDS sites are as follows: Quest Elementary, Ocean Breeze Elementary and Holland Elementary. The re-designated sites are MILA Elementary, Creel Elementary, Andersen Elementary, Titusville High, Eau Gallie High, Satellite High and Johnson Middle. Honorable Mention titles were awarded to Saturn Elementary, Gemini Elementary, Tropical Elementary, and Stevenson Elementary. Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High retains its past Honorable Mention status.
Implemented in 1988, The MDS project was developed by the Department in cooperation with the Florida Music Educators Association. The purpose of this project is to identify, recognize and promote statewide school music at the elementary, middle/junior, and high school levels that balance diversity, high performance standards, and instructional quality in music education.
