Alachua County Math Team Wins Top Honors
After finishing second in 2005 and 2006, the 26-member team from Buchholz High School in Alachua County recently won first place in this year’s National Mu Alpha Theta math competition. The students, who are coached by math teacher Will Frazer, dominated all three competition divisions, including Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Algebra II/Geometry. The Buchholz team, which captured its third consecutive state title in April, won more than 100 individual trophies and finished first in the sweepstakes competition for the school whose students have the best overall performance.
The competitions are hosted by Mu Alpha Theta, a national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society with more than 75,000 student members from more than 1,500 schools. Florida’s Mu Alpha Theta program is one of the largest in the United States.
