Oviedo High Student Receives Points of Light Award
Danica Dickinson, a 12th grade student at Oviedo High has been honored with
the Daily Points of Light Award from the National Points of Light Foundation.
Danica has served as a Teen Trendsetter, a program of Volunteer Florida Foundation, for the last four years. She started
as a new student in Seminole County Public Schools. She had attended private
schools prior to that time. For each of these years, Danica has recruited,
trained, and coordinated other teen reading mentors volunteering at Lawton
Elementary with struggling third grade readers. As a result of her efforts,
80 third graders have transitioned from struggling readers to eager readers.
Danica also recruited 2 other teens to start Teen Trendsetter programs at Carillon
Elementary and Keeth Elementary.
Each summer, Danica serves on mission teams with her church group and volunteers
in Central America. In 8th grade, Danica was selected as a Walt Disney Dreamer
and Doer who excels in the areas of curiosity, confidence, courage, and constancy.
The Points of Light Award will be presented to Danica at the Seminole County
Public Schools Board Meeting on November 21, 2006 at 5:45 p.m.
