Clay County Science Students Shine
at State Science and Engineering Fair

The 51st Annual State Science and Engineering Fair was a huge success for the students of Clay County. Of the 14 students that were sent by the district, 12 of them placed fourth place or higher out of the six places that were awarded. Four students also received five special recognition awards. Rachel Hopkins (Ridgeview High School) was chosen as the winner of the Women in Geophysics Award and also received a scholarship award by UCF, Jay Coggin (Ridgeview High School) received a $300 cash award by the Engineering Society and Katie Termer (Clay High School) and Paul Chakkaphak (Ridgeview High School) will be representing Clay County at the International Fair in May.

The District's Curriculum Specialist, Brenda Weeks was very excited with the results. "I feel the success at state speaks very highly of our Science teachers, school fair coordinators, judges, and the selection committees."

The following is a summary of all the winners:

Senior Division

  • 2nd Place: Medicine and Health — Paul Chakkaphak (Ridgeview High School)
  • 2nd Place: Engineering — Jay Coggin (Ridgeview High School)
  • 3rd Place: Environmental — Katie Termer (Clay High School)
  • 3rd Place: Earth Space — Rachel Hopkins (Ridgeview High School)
  • 3rd Place: Earth Space — Jackie MacKinnon (Fleming Island High School)
  • 4th Place: Chemistry — Amy Nuebar (Keystone Heights High School)

Junior Division

  • 2nd Place: Biochemistry — Scott Arend (Orange Park Junior High)
  • 3rd Place: Botany — Kristen Miller (Green Cove Springs Junior High)
  • 3rd Place: Biochemistry — Bobby Reynolds (Pinewood Christian Academy)
  • 4th Place: Chemistry — Mitchell Stecker (Lakeside Junior High)
  • 4th Place: Earth Space — Angela Evans (Orange Park Junior High)
  • 4th Place: Microbiology — Lydia Lichlyter (Orange Park Junior High)
