Success, Any Way You Look at It!
Students proudly hold their well-deserved Renaissance cards
Amazing things are happening at this inner city Jacksonville high school, which just a year and a half ago received an "F" for its school grade. Last year, administration, faculty and staff at Andrew Jackson High School rallied to change the future course of the school. With a complete overhaul of the media center, the initiation of a new reading program, and the onset of the Renaissance Rewards Program, Andrew Jackson students proved their abilities by raising last year's grade to a "C"!
The reading program enlists the aid of some wonderful people who work with our 9th graders in small groups. Most teachers contribute to the successful completion of the 25-book standard. During the 2001-02 school year the media center checked out approximately 2,000 books, however this year it has circulated an amazing 12,000 books. Many students are waiting for books they have heard about from their peers.
Josten's Renaissance is a program through which students' academic achievements are encouraged and rewarded, faculty and staff are valued and appreciated, and the community participates and contributes to the life of the school. A Renaissance card provides students with special privileges and entrance to awesome events. Qualifications are reviewed and new cards distributed each 9-weeks, as follows:
Gold card 3.5-4.0 GPA
Silver card 3.0-3.49
Bronze card 0.5 GPA increase over the previous 9 weeks
No disciplinary referrals resulting in a suspension
This year, there was a 43% increase in the number of cards awarded. There is now a student committee to plan and implement activities, and applications for the 2003-04 student committee are still growing.
