Coronado Beach Elementary Students Nestle in Their Pajamas and Read
|
Principal Bushnell reads her favorite story, "The Polar Express"
|
On a cool winter evening, parents, students, and staff sporting their coziest
pajamas piled into the Coronado Beach Elementary media center to celebrate reading.
The Reading Counts Pajama Party is one of many ways the school encourages students
to read. Based on the turnout and apparent family support, it is not surprising
that Coronado is an A school with 92 percent of its students performing on or
above grade level in reading. By coupling effective instruction with entertaining
activities, such as the Reading Counts Pajama Party, students truly develop
a knowledge of and appreciation for reading.
Throughout the evening, students demonstrated their fabulous reading skills
by reading aloud to others. Attentive guests listened as Principal Bushnell
shared her favorite holiday story, The Polar Express. Families also gathered
to read books together in the various nooks of the media center. Students especially
enjoyed watching their parents in the hot seat, as they attempted to master
the Reading Counts computerized tests that students take to assess their reading
comprehension. The combination of parental involvement, staff dedication, and
overall enthusiasm made the party a tremendous success.
