Florida School Breakfast Week Promotion
National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to all children.
Studies show that students are more alert and perform better in class when they eat breakfast as they have a general increase in math grades and reading scores, increased attention levels, reduced school nurse visits, and improved behavior. Schools are encouraged to be involved with promotional events throughout the year to help improve and better prepare their students for academic performance. Eating breakfast can make a difference in a student's performance not only during a statewide testing but every day of the year.
This year USDA's Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia, issued a challenge to increase School Breakfast Program participation in the region. In response to this challenge, the Florida Department of Education is implementing a statewide promotion with the first annual Florida School Breakfast Week occurring September 17-21, 2007.
The Florida Department of Education will partner with the Florida School Nutrition Association (FSNA), program sponsors, and other key groups to promote the befits and importance of students eating breakfast through a state celebration modeled after the National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) celebration in March.
"Excellence Begins with Breakfast" is the theme of Florida's first annual School Breakfast Week occurring September 17-21, 2007.
