2008 Florida School Breakfast Week Promotion

National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to all children.

Studies show that students are more alert and perform better in class when they eat breakfast as they have a general increase in math grades and reading scores, increased attention levels, reduced school nurse visits, and improved behavior. Schools are encouraged to be involved with promotional events throughout the year to help improve and better prepare their students for academic performance. Eating breakfast can make a difference in a student's performance not only during a statewide testing but every day of the year.

Super Foods Create Super Heroes is the theme of Florida's second annual School Breakfast Week occurring September 15-19, 2008. The focus will include the Super Nutrient Heroes for vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, fiber and protein will tie into our overall theme of “Excellence Begins with Breakfast”. By consuming a good breakfast each morning students can become their own super hero. Side panels for milk and juice cartons will include these characters and will be available this fall.

The Florida Department of Education will partner with the Florida School Nutrition Association (FSNA), program sponsors, and other key groups to promote the benefits and importance of students eating breakfast through a state celebration modeled after the National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) celebration in March.
