The Dietetic Internship Program

About the Program

Food & Nutrition Management

The Florida Department of Education (DOE) is located in the capital city of Tallahassee. The Food and Nutrition Management (FNM) Section operates within the Division of Support Services, Bureau of School Support Services under the DOE. FNM is responsible for the administrative oversight of the National School Lunch, School Breakfast, After-School Snack, Special Milk, and Summer Food Service Programs in Florida on behalf of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Program sponsors include public and private, non-profit schools; residential child care institutions; juvenile justice and correctional facilities housing youthful offenders; and other public and private agencies that meet program regulations requirements for sponsorship of a USDA Child Nutrition Program. School meal programs were created to "…safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation's children…" To ensure this mandate is being met, FNM provides administrative reviews and technical assistance to assist sponsors in meeting financial and nutrition related goals and regulations. Two students are eligible to enter this nine month, full-time program (September-May) and are selected in the Spring intern/internship match process.

Program Mission

The mission of Dietetic Internship Program is to prepare nutrition graduates for entry into dietetics with an emphasis on improving the nutritional status of children and the quality of school meals.
