Major Initiatives

College Goal Sunday - College Goal Sunday is a grant program funded by the Lumina Foundation. Information and assistance is provided to low income, first generation, and racial/ethnic minority students and families to complete the FAFSA form that is required to qualify for federal financial aid. Florida hosted 23 sites around the state in 2006 and our 2007 goal is to add a total of 20 additional sites in 20 new counties. By 2008, the goal is to have a College Goal Sunday event in each county. The 2007 event will be held on February 25th, please mark your calendars. For more information, please contact

Achieving the Dream

is funded by the Lumina Foundation who partnered with several organizations including the American Association of Community Colleges and Jobs for the Future. Four colleges (Broward, Hillsborough, Tallahassee and Valencia) received a $50,000 investment grant to develop plans for addressing the academic success of low-income and minority students. Once the plans were accepted, each institution receive a four year implementation grant of $100,000 per year. The state received $75,000 per year to conduct research and spread the lessons learned around the Florida Community College System through hosting policy seminars, meetings and conferences. For more information, please contact

Education Commission of the States

ECS granted $20,000 to enhance the role of community colleges in teacher education. These funds are used for consultant fees in implementing Educator Preparation Institutes and Competency Based Certification and to sponsor teams of professionals from around the FLCCS to travel to state and national policy seminars.
